Cross country teams compete in Huntsville meet

James Clemens’ girls cross country team finished fifth overall Saturday in the Twilight Panther Prowl in Huntsville, where several other local schools also competed.

The cross country meet consisted of B races in boys and girls Class 1A-4A and 5A-7A with a “championship” race that took place for the larger schools.

The James Clemens boys team competed in both races, as did Athens High’s boys and girls teams. In the girls championship race, Jenna Shereyk was the top local finisher, placing 16th in a time of 20:41.51. Samantha Burns also placed in the top 20, with a 20th place finish. Hollie Shereyk, Reagan Kvicala and Sabel Mattingly also scored points for the Jets.

AHS also competed in the championship race, placing 13th as a team. Ella Romine, Sydney Lindsey, Aliana Lopez, Daisy Vicente and Emily Hill scored points for the Golden Eagles.

James Clemens and Athens’ boys team competed in the championship race, with the Jets placing 13th and the Eagles 17th.

Alex Shah, Cannon Kvicala, A.J. Sheldrick, Elliott Kliesner and Garrett Nix scored points for James Clemens while Joshua Simmons, Guy Greenhaw, Graham Hoover, Kolter Lindsey and Garrett Murph placed for AHS.

Elkmont had a good performance in the girls B 1A-4A race, placing fourth in the team competition. Claudia Allen finished eighth overall in a time of 22:52.92. Melanie Hernandez, Jazmin Ristau, Kaylee Varnie and Britney Clem also scored for the Red Devils.

Athens Bible and Tanner had runners competing as individuals, with Tanner’s Yami Mendoza placing 15th overall in a time of 24:17.10. Lillian Bradford was the top ABS finisher, placing 22nd in a time of 24:52.58.

Elkmont’s boys placed fifth overall in the 1A-4A B race, with Chase Prater placing fifth overall in a time of 17:33.03 to lead all local finishers. Christian Smith, Brantley Hammock, Masin Morris and Alex Armstrong also scored points for the Red Devils.

ABS finished eighth in the team competition. Nicolas Ulrich was the top finisher for ABS with a 14th place finish in a time of 19:08.19. Christopher Waddell, Case Joel, Grey Fortenberry and Erik Hall also scored for the Lions. Tanner placed 12th as a team, with Frankie Vicente, Richard Rosas, Manuel Felipe, Kevil Calderon and Gavin Hagood scoring for the Rattlers.

AHS finished eighth as a team in the 5A-7A girls B race, with Emma Holland, Ella Kathrine Black, Jayla Teston, Bailey Hartsfield and Caroline White scoring points for the Eagles.

James Clemens was the top local school in the boys 5A-7A B race, placing sixth with East Limestone right behind in sixth.

Samuel Blades placed 17th to lead the Jets, finishing in a time of 18:29.60. Laith Qushair, Joseph Holder, Bryce Brown and Kody Shively also scored for James Clemens.

Chase Richardson led East Limestone’s team with a 23rd place finish in a time of 18:39.33. Daniel Torres, Angel Reyes, Dylan Irvin and Colton Chambers scored points for the Indians.

AHS finished 16th as a team, with Mason Daniel, Luis Diaz, Isaac Smith, Evan Sheffield and Wyatt Maclin scoring for the Golden Eagles.
