Soccer continues to be a growing program for Athens Parks and Recreation.

Recreation Director Ben Wiley said the fall season, which is the main season, kicks off on Tuesday, Sept. 3, with opening ceremonies at 5 p.m. He said there are about 525 players registered.

“We had approximately 420 last year, so we grew by more than 100 players,” Wiley said. “Spring soccer also continues to grow.”

Wiley said parents’ excitement about soccer has increased as well. This year, fall soccer is offering teams for ages 4 to 18 years old.

“It is great exercise for the kids, and I think the overall popularity of the sport is growing,” Wiley said.

For opening ceremonies, the teams will parade by fans at the Sportsplex’s soccer fields. Wiley said there will be a drawing for prizes for the players as well.
