Get the ride of your life: Annual Dragon Boat Race and Festival is set for May 13

The dragons are set to return May 13 to Decatur, where they will be making waves and raising money for a local non-profit.

The sixth annual Decatur-Morgan Hospital Foundation Dragon Boat Race and Festival, presented by Toray Carbon Fibers, kicks off with opening ceremonies and an ancient ritual, “Awakening the Dragon,” at 8:30 a.m. at the Point Mallard Aquatic Center beach. The ritual includes dotting the eyes of the dragon head to symbolize awakening the dragons’ spirits. Racing action begins at 9 a.m. As crews compete, spectators may watch and cheer their favorite team from the beach or from the water at a safe distance from the race course. In addition to the action in the water, the waterpark will be filled with tailgate tents, music, concessions and other family fun. Aquatic Center pools and rides will be closed.

Admission is free and a limited amount of free parking is available inside Point Mallard Park. NARCOG buses will provide shuttle service from the GE parking lot to the Point Mallard Aquatic Center for $1 per ride. Donations will be accepted at the event and proceeds benefit the Decatur-Morgan Hospital Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization. The money raised from this year’s event will support the physical therapy department, respiratory therapy department and neurology program.

The festival began five years ago in Decatur with 53 teams competing for medals. The 2016 event raised more than $159,000 and had 75 teams and 1,800 paddlers participate. Proceeds helped purchase new cardiac monitors for the emergency department.

Team rules

Teams of 20 paddlers, a drummer and a trained dragon boat steerer/coach will race in authentic Asian-style 46-foot-long dragon boats. Teams may have four alternates for a total of 25 team members or they can race with a minimum of 16. There must be at least eight female paddlers a minimum of 15 years old with parental consent for adult teams. All skill levels and physiques can participate, making it the ultimate team-building sport requiring more than just power to win — racers must also have synchronicity and finesse. Each team is guaranteed at least two races on the 250-meter race course with winners advancing to the finals.

The event is rain or shine and goes throughout the day until about 4 p.m.
