Enrollment is now open to students in grades K-12 who are interested in taking classes through Alabama Connections Academy, a statewide public virtual school authorized by Limestone County Schools.

In a press release, Superintendent Dr. Tom Sisk said the system is “thrilled” to be working with ALCA, which he described as having a “great track record” of education and student success. Enrollment to the academy opened to the public May 2.

“Limestone County is committed to expanding student access to quality education no matter where in the state they reside, and this new online school will offer students an individualized learning opportunity tailored to their unique strengths and needs,” Sisk said.

ALCA will offer students Alabama-certified teachers, an “award-winning” curriculum, technology tools, electives, and in-person and online social experiences, creating a learning program for families who want an individualized approach to education. Learning from home, students will work closely with licensed teachers using daily lesson plans that can be personalized to meet individual student needs.

Curriculum from the Connections Academy program will combine technology with hands-on materials. A parent, or another adult “learning coach,” helps to monitor student progress in the home.

Students residing in any county throughout the state of Alabama are eligible to enroll full-time in Alabama Connections Academy.

“Parents interested in providing their child with an innovative, technology-enhanced Kindergarten experience may also consider enrolling in ALCA,” the release said.

Virtual school approach

Virtual schools may serve a wide range of students, including those who are significantly ahead or behind in the classroom, those who need a flexible schedule or learn at a different pace from their peers, and those who need more individualized attention or live in isolated rural settings.

Homebound and previously home-schooled students can also thrive in the Alabama Connections Academy program. As a public school, there are no fees or tuition to attend and all students are required to take the same state assessments as traditional public school students.

Students graduating from Alabama Connections Academy will earn an Alabama High School Diploma.

“In preparation for its inaugural academic year, the school will establish an office within the Limestone County School District and hire a school leader and team of certified teachers,” the release said.
