Everyone wants to make children’s Christmas wishes come true, even when times are lean.
That’s why the Marine Corps and other organizations sponsor children who might not get to experience the joys of Christmas morning.
Signups for Toys for Tots will be held from Nov. 27 through Dec. 2, with a make-up day Dec. 7. Hours for signup are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Signups will be held in the Intergraph Warehouse, 300 Dunlap Road, near Madison.
If traveling Interstate 565, get off on Exit 8. Take the Wall-Triana side of the exit to get to the Intergraph Warehouse.
When signing up for gifts for children from infancy to age 16, bring picture identification for the legal parent or guardian. Bring a birth certificate and Social Security card for each child and proof of family income and residency.
For those in the community wanting to donate to Toys for Tots, please bring a new, unwrapped toy to any Dollar General Store. Store personnel say if you plan to bring two gifts, please make one of them for a girl and one for a boy.
There are also many other ways to sponsor a child at Christmas. Several locations around Athens, such as Cracker Barrel, and a number of churches, have Angel Trees. These contain the names of children whose families have registered them with the Salvation Army to receive gifts.
Jennifer White at the Department of Human Resources said the Salvation Army has accepted the agency’s limit, but individuals are encouraged to sponsor a child. She said the DHR still has more than two-dozen children needing a sponsor.
