Area public and private schools joined forces Friday to raise $21,000 as part of a “Hat Day” fundraiser for injured Johnson Elementary School second-grader Ashleigh Jones.

“I was amazed with the participation and how much people gave,” said Johnson Elementary principal Brad Lewis. “It was incredible.”

Jones was injured April 18 when she was hit by a car on Copeland Road while crossing the street. Lewis sent an update Monday afternoon saying Jones is slowly healing and in a medically-induced coma, but doctors are hoping to bring her out of it today.

The participating schools each deposited their funds into the Ashleigh Jones Medical Fund at Redstone Federal Credit Union. Members of the public who want to help Jones can donate to the fund at any branch.
