Smith, Williams medal at state golf tournament

Athens’ Ally Williams and Clements’ Matt Smith each had a top-three finish Tuesday at the AHSAA State Golf Tournament at the Grand National Golf Course in Auburn.

Williams shot a 71 during the first round Monday, followed by a 73 during Tuesday’s final round. Her 1-over 144 was good enough for second overall in Class 6A. Park Crossing’s Brooke Sansom, who shot 66 Monday, finished with a 73 Tuesday to earn low medalist honors at 5-under 139.

It was the second-straight state tournament appearance for Williams, who finished eighth overall in Class 6A-7A in 2016.

Playing in his first state golf tournament, Matt Smith had a strong finish Tuesday to finish third overall in Class 3A. Smith shot a 74 Monday and was in sixth place entering the final round. The Clements senior birdied three holes and had just one bogey on the back nine Tuesday to finish with a 1-over 145 over the two-day tournament.

Providence Christian finished at 590 to win the 3A boys team title in its first year in the division. West Morgan was second at 619. Thomas Ponder of Providence Christian shot a 138 to claim the 3A individual title.

In the 6A girls team competition, Muscle Shoals and Northridge tied with identical 503 scores but the Trojans won the tie-breaker for first place – the team’s fourth-place scorer Riva Ray shot 187 to edge Northridge’s No. 4 total. Girls’ team totals are based on the top three scores for each team.

With a combined score of 638, Clements’ Abigail Baker, Makayla Browning and Nicole Towe finished fourth as a team in the 1A-3A girls tournament. Providence Christian shot 489 to capture the 1A-3A championship.

Fairhope senior Virginia Green shot a 6-under 66 for the second-straight day Tuesday to finish with a 12-under 132 total to set a new AHSAA state record.

Mountain Brook (7A), Muscle Shoals (6A), St. Paul’s Episcopal (5A), UMS-Wright (4A), Providence Christian (3A) and Westbrook Christian (1A-2A) won boys’ championships Tuesday. Winning girls’ team state championships were Spain Park (7A), Muscle Shoals (6A), Trinity Presbyterian (4A-5A) and Providence Christian (1A-2A).
