Spring is here and Easter isn’t far behind.

Ask what Ben Wiley and his crew are planning for the upcoming holiday and some say they’re going to pull a rabbit out of a hat. In fact, a bunny has something to do with the event they have in store for area children.

The director of Athens Parks and Recreation Department is readying the inaugural Easter egg hunt at All Kids Park, a part of Athens Sportsplex .

“This is the first time to sponsor an event like this,” Wiley said, adding the department hopes to add more events in all Athens parks each year.

He admits he is a little worried they might have more children than planned for, but he’s excited and already counting the eggs in the hope the community will come out and enjoy the day.

Wiley said Easter is a spring holiday kids relate to and a Easter egg hunt is something they can do outside as long as the weather holds up. He added it’s also a good time for parents and children to see what’s been happening at All Kids Park, the first inclusive playground in the city for children of all physical abilities. The first phase of the park was completed last fall.

The free Easter event, set for Saturday, April 15 will include three hunts and children should bring their own baskets.

The first hunt, set for babies and children up to 4 years old, is set to start at 2:30 p.m. One parent can assist their child during the hunt.

A second hunt will start at 3 p.m. and is for children ages five to nine. One parent can assist in this hunt as well.

The third hunt, which includes children ages 10 to 13, will start at 3:30 p.m.

Children who find a golden egg will win special prizes.

Games and activities get underway at 2 p.m.
