Foster parent spaghetti dinner

The Limestone County Fosters & Adoptive Parents Association is holding a spaghetti dinner from 4-8 p.m. today at Westside Community Center, 21639 Alabama 99, in Athens. Tickets are $8, adults; $4, age 10 and under; and free for age 2 and under.

SATURDAY

Free dump day

From 7 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Limestone County residents can bring one pickup truck or trailer load of trash free of charge to the Transfer Station at 16100 BFI Lane. No contractor dumping allowed. No hazardous waste or medical waste accepted. Appliances with freon must have compressor removed. Gates close promptly at noon.

ELHS band’s yard and mulch sale

The East Limestone High School band’s community yard and mulch sale is set for 7 a.m. until noon Saturday at the school’s old gymnasium. Mulch is $50 per cubic yard and available in brown, black and natural. Orders can be picked up Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Fifty percent of proceeds benefit the school band.

Yard sale fundraiser

Athens Order of the Eastern Star chapter 214 will hold a yard sale fundraiser from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at Athens Masonic Lodge 16 building at Lucas Ferry Road and Elm Street. Items include clothing and household goods. Coffee and biscuits served.

Container gardening program

The Athens Garden Club will sponsor a free to the public event at 10 a.m. Saturday at The Beasley Center, 202 W. Bryan Street in Athens. Amy Rakeshaw, owner of Sugar Magnolias in Decatur, will talk about “Successful Container Gardening.” More information: athensgardenclub@aol.com.

Companion planting program

Limestone County Master Gardeners Association is offering a free presentation to the public on “Companion Planting in the Garden” from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at Lowe’s in the back of the Garden Center. Gardening questions answered

Limestone County Master Gardeners Association is available every Tuesday and the first Saturday of every month at Athens Limestone Public Library from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. to answer gardening questions.

Used book sale

Friends of the Athens-Limestone Public Library will hold a used book sale from 10:15 a.m.-2:15 p.m. Tuesday at the library, 603 S. Jefferson St. More information: 256-232-1233.

Nelson Mandela memoir forum

Athens State University’s Coleman Center for Religious Studies and Ethics will host a forum at noon Tuesday based on Nelson Mandela’s memoir, “Long Walk to Freedom.” The forum will focus on the practical wisdom and life lessons taken from the life journey of Mandela, and how to recover from setbacks with renewed hope, communicate and reconcile with enemies and master circumstances. The event will be held in the second floor chapel at Founders Hall. The public is invited.

American Legion fundraiser

The American Legion Post 49 fundraiser, sponsored by Krystal Hamburgers is set for 4-9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, March 28 and 29, at Krystal on U.S. 72 in Athens. Krystal will give 50 percent of net sales during those hours to American Legion as long as the customer purchase includes redemption of a special flyer. Flyers are available at Post 49 at 124 Cloverleaf Drive in Athens. Proceeds support Post 49’s youth activities. More information: 256-230-6233.

Boy Scouts community breakfast

The Boy Scouts of America Greater Alabama Council’s Athens-Limestone County Breakfast is set for 7-8:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 5 at the Limestone County Event Center, 114 W. Pryor St. in Athens. Guest speaker is Eric Blackwell, senior director of Plant Operations at Polaris. To reserve a seat, RSVP by March 30 to Christina Crawford, 256-476-0026 or christina.crawford@scouting.org. All donations at the event support the Boy Scouts program.

Crape Myrtle Pageant

The 16th annual Crape Myrtle Pageant will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 8 at Cedar Hill Elementary School. Entry deadline is Friday, March 31. More information: 256-497-5425 or 256-431-1073.

Ballroom dance classes

A 10-week series of dance classes featuring swing, waltz, foxtrot, and rumba are being held from 7-8 p.m. every Tuesday at Pincham-Lincoln Center through May 23. Taught by a certified ballroom dance instructor the classes are $50 per person which covers all 10 classes. No partner required. Proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity. Pre-K registration

The Limestone County Board of Education has announced Office of School Readiness (OCR) pre-K registration is ongoing through Friday, March 31. Parents can register pre-K children online at www.lcsk12.org. Pre-K is available at the following schools: Blue Springs, Cedar Hill, Elkmont, Johnson, Piney Chapel and Tanner.

Vidalia onions sale

Athens Ladies Civitan is now taking orders for the annual Vidalia onion sale. The price is $10 per 10-pound bag. The deadline for orders and payment is April 15. Onions expected to arrive in early May. Proceeds benefit programs for special needs children and adults in Limestone County. Orders can be taken by any Ladies Civitan member or at 256-233-0258 where a message can be left for a return call, or at 256-658-1985.

County Relay for Life registration

Registration is underway for the Limestone County for a Cure Relay for Life team’s second annual Cornhole for a Cure Tournament to benefit American Cancer Society. Fee is $40 per team through April 20, and $50 thereafter and the day of the event at the Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena on Alabama 99. Forms available at the County Commission office and County for a Cure Facebook page.

Elkmont beauty walk

Registration is underway for the 12th annual Elkmont Beauty Walk at Elkmont High School to be held April 21-22 as a fundraiser for the school band. Registration deadline is April 7. Entry fee is $35 and $5 to enter photogenic. There is a $5 admission charge at the door at 7 nightly and at 2 p.m. on April 22. Competition includes kindergarten through fifth grade, babies through preschool, sixth through 12th grades and a 12th-grade guys division. Entry forms and money can be turned in at the Elkmont band room, Keila’s Hair Salon in Ardmore, any band booster officer or mailed to Keila Berzett, 29200 Ragsdale Creek Road, Elkmont AL 35620.

CEMETERY CLEANUPS

Pleasant Point Cemetery — Cleanup day is Saturday, March 25. Mowing, cleaning and clearing. If unable to attend donations made out to Pleasant Point Cemetery can be sent to: Linda Garrett, 20467 Elkton Road, Athens, AL 35614. More information: 256-232-7961.

Bethel Church of Christ Cemetery — Annual $50 donations for the cemetery upkeep can be made out to Bethel Cemetery Fund and sent to Tommy Sprague, 25917 Pepper Road, Athens, AL 35613. Also, everything must be removed from graves for beginning of mowing season.

MEETINGS

• NARFE. National Association of Retired Federal Employees chapter 1480 will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 25, at the Veterans Museum, 100 W. Pryor Street, Athens. Melanie Newton with Spirit of Athens is guest speaker. Breakfast will be served. More information: Dean Morgan 256-233-0248.

• Ladies Civitan. The Athens Ladies Civitan club will meet at noon Tuesday, March 28, at the city of Athens Board of Education Building on U.S.31 North. • Toastmasters Club. Athens Toastmasters Club will meet 5:45-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, at 124 Cloverleaf Drive (American Legion Post 49). The club meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month to learn and enhance public speaking and leadership skills. The public is invited.
