A man accused of taking a bank bag allegedly containing $5,000 from an unoccupied parked vehicle in Athens has been charged with breaking and entering a vehicle, an official said.

Jairus Lamar Ervin, 18, of 903 W. Washington St., was arrested on the charge Wednesday night by Athens police, Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said.

The victim reported the money was taken on Nov. 16 from his vehicle while it was parked at the post office, the chief said.

Investigators Kelly Fussell and Jonathan Caldwell developed Ervin as a suspect shortly after the theft.

On Wednesday, Officer Kirk Wimberly stopped Ervin for speeding in a school zone. Wimberly contacted the investigators, who interviewed and arrested Ervin.

He was booked at the Police Department and transferred to the Limestone County Jail, where he was released after posting bail of $2,500.

Asked if Ervin could be charged with theft, Johnson said, “The investigators are looking at several other cases, so more charges are certainly not out of the question.”
