Anyone with sensitive information that needs to be shredded is invited to take advantage of the Better Business Bureau’s Free Shred Day/Recycling Event, set for 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 21, at Calhoun Community College in Decatur.

Residents and small businesses are encouraged to take advantage of free shredding services to properly dispose of sensitive paper documents, electronic recycling, hard drive destruction and prescription and over-the-counter drug take back.

“Our goal is to help our community minimize their chances of having their identity stolen with professional document shredding and hard drive destruction, provide a safe and environmentally friendly way to dispose of unused drugs and electronics of all kinds and give back by helping a local BBB accredited charity,” said BBB Regional Vice President Tricia Pruitt.

Participants can bring up to three boxes or bags of documents to be destroyed in a commercial shredding truck. Documents will be shredded on site and attendees can request to watch their items shred. Secure Destruction Service will also destroy hard drives on site.

Secure Destruction Services will also be accepting computer/PC towers, laptops, servers, cell phones, rechargeable batteries, routers, modems, switches, cables, wires, printers, fax machines, UPS battery backups, toner/ink cartridges, keyboards, mice, LCD monitors and consumer electronics (no CRT monitors, old TVs or large appliances). The Morgan County Sheriff’s Department will be accepting both over the counter and prescription drugs (pill and liquid) for safe disposal after the event.

Hospice of the Valley will be accepting the following items Camp Hope, (a camp for children experiencing the death of a significant loved one): School glue, colored construction paper, markers, plates, napkins, fruit snacks, granola bars and Jolly Ranchers.

All components of shred day will be in a quick and easy drive-thru set up. You will not need to leave your car.
