Advisory: List of street projects going on in Athens

Multiple street improvements are underway in Athens this week as weather is allowing for projects to progress.

Although the work is a hindrance to motorists, it is necessary to keep streets properly maintained for drainage, striping, paving and safety. Motorists should use caution in these work areas or, if possible, plan alternate routes. Street Department Director Dolph Bradford provided this list of projects:

• On Wednesday, May 11, Reed Contracting will begin paving on Lucas Ferry Road near the Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena. Crews will have to close lanes as needed.

• On Wednesday, May 11, Reed Contracting will begin paving on East Street. Crews will have to close lanes as needed.

• On Wednesday, May 11, Reed Contracting plans to start milling to prepare for paving on Market and Madison streets. Crews will have to close lanes as needed.

• On Wednesday, May 11, crews will install a pipe through Washington Street near Strange Street to upgrade drainage for a relocation project coming later this year.

• Crews are working on the turn lanes at the U.S. 31 and Huntsville-Browns Ferry Road intersection. Please slow down and use caution.

• Crews continue to work at the Hobbs and Marion streets intersection in downtown.

• The Hine Street paving and drainage improvement ATRIP grant project is ongoing and will be for several months. This will require lane closures as needed.

• By week’s end, crews plan to work at Clinton and Forrest streets to reclaim right-of-way across from Athens Middle School.
