Terrance Watkins has made up his mind.
The Athens senior football player ended his college recruitment Tuesday night with a verbal commitment to the University of Southern Mississippi.
Nicknamed “Quez” by his teammates, Watkins made his commitment Tuesday night on social media with the following tweet:
“Blessed to say that I have decided to commit to the University of Southern Miss.”
Watkins possessed scholarship offers from a half-dozen Division-I schools including Georgia Southern, Middle Tennessee State, Western Kentucky, Georgia Southern and Samford.
The 6-foot, 176-pound receiver caught 44 passes for 847 yards and 12 touchdown for Athens during his senior season. A second-team All-State selection in Class 6A, Watkins burst on the scene during his junior year when he returned both a punt and kickoff for touchdowns in the first two games of the 2014 season.
He continued to be a threat on special teams and was the focal point of the Golden Eagles’ offense over the past two seasons. Watkins averaged 19.25 yards per catch and served periodically this year as the team’s “wildcat” quarterback.
Watkins is the third Athens player in two years to commit to Southern Miss. Paxton Schrimsher, an All-State safety, received a scholarship while teammate Cade Anderson joined the team as a preferred walk-on last year.
All verbal commitments are nonbinding. National Signing Day is Feb. 3.
