For 20 years, Janie Hurley Owens had worked for the Mental Health Center of North Central Alabama.
She was killed when the 2014 Ford van in which she was a passenger collided with a 1996 dump truck about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Alabama 24 and Lawrence County 325, five miles west of Trinity, State Trooper Jonathan Appling said Thursday.
The driver of the van, Denise Allene Schilz, 50, of Falkville, was taken to Decatur General Hospital for treatment, the trooper said. The driver of the dump truck and three children in the van, whom troopers did not identify, were also transported to area hospitals, Appling said.
The van driver was taking three children home from the Mental Health Center preschool program in Moulton when the accident occurred, said Bill Giguere, development officer for the MHCNCA, which serves people in Limestone, Morgan and Lawrence counties.
“At this time, none are believed to have any critical injuries as a result of the accident,” Giguere said.
Owens was a mental health worker at the Moulton Lawrence Counseling Center Preschool Program at the time of her death. An employee said Owens was well liked by her coworkers and the children she helped and that Owens would be greatly missed.
State troopers are investigating the accident.
The Moulton Lawrence Counseling Center preschool program and the children’s summer day treatment programs were closed Thursday and will remain closed Friday, Giguere said.
Regularly scheduled treatment services for children will resume Monday. Clinical services for adults at the Moulton Lawrence Counseling Center will remain open.
The Mental Health Center has contacted family members of Owens as well as the children involved in the wreck, he said.
“We ask that you please keep the families of the staff and children involved in this accident in your thoughts and prayers,” Giguere said.
