Aileen Orr Christopher
Mrs. Aileen Orr Christopher, 90, passed away Saturday Dec. 27, 2014, at Limestone Health Facility in Athens.
She was born in Morgan County on April 2, 1924, to the late Harry Welch and Ada Penn Orr. Her family moved from Morgan County to Limestone County where they started a peach orchard when Aileen was a young girl. She attended Athens High School, graduating in 1943. She married T. Cecil Christopher on July 7, 1946. Aileen worked as a Secretary at Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) while Cecil was a student there and after moving back to Athens she would help him in his accounting business over his career as a CPA.
As a member of First Presbyterian Church in Athens, Aileen taught Sunday School and Bible School classes for many years as her children were growing up. She was also a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader over the years and touched the lives of many teenage girls as Club Mother of Sub Deb Club. In addition to her tireless support of Cecil’s civic endeavors she was also active in the community as a member of the Jayceettes, the Daughters of the American Revolution and Athens Garden Club. She enjoyed making flower arrangements for all occasions and especially enjoyed making Christmas wreaths to be displayed on special buildings in downtown Athens.
Aileen and Cecil loved to travel during their 53 years of marriage, having traveled to the Panama Canal, Australia, Hawaii and several other countries. They made trips to Maine with Greg and Joanie as well as traveling out west with Mike, Trudy, Matt and Ross. She continued to travel as much as possible after Cecil’s death in 1999 until her health kept her grounded.
She is survived by her four children: Michael Edward Christopher and wife, Trudy, of Canton, Georgia, Gregory Orr Christopher and wife, Joanie, of Atlanta, LeAnne C. Miller and husband, John, of Athens, and Jeffrey Thomas Christopher and wife, Nancy, of Auburn; sister, Essie Orr Hardison of Athens; and brothers and sisters-in-law, James Allen and Helen Christopher and Norris and Barbara Christopher of Athens and Martha Jane and Tony Benfante of New York. She was a doting “Nana/Noni” to grandchildren Sally Miller of Harvest, Matt Christopher and wife Caroline of Daytona, Florida, Eric Miller and wife Jenna of Harvest, Ross Christopher of Savannah, Georgia, Mary Cole, Lauren and Olivia Christopher of Auburn and Raychel Kinner of Gainesville, Florida.
