STATE TRACK AND FIELD: Athens Bible girls earn Red Map in Class 1A

Published 11:08 pm Saturday, May 3, 2025

Athens Bible’s varsity girls showed up and showed out this weekend.

Kaylie Key (800-meter, 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter run) and Meredith Romans (discus and shot put) combined for five gold medals to help lead the Class 1A Trojans to a runner-up finish at this year’s state track and field meet in Cullman.

Romans set a new discus record in her classification with a toss of 133-06 — besting the previous mark of 122-00 set by Beverly McCall in 1986.

Heidi Weatherford, Macy Weatherford, Rachel Bradford and KayLeigh Gaines, meanwhile, teamed up to win a bronze medal in the 4×100-meter relay.

“We are so proud of this team,” Athens Bible coach Billy Bradford said. “They have worked so hard this year, and the team has grown so much in three years — from two girls to 12. Multiple state champions with Kaylie and Meredith, the relay girls and all the others competing, making finals and making us proud. It’s a true honor and privilege to work with this team. The family at Athens Bible School is the best.”

Athens, meanwhile, had a trio of medalists in Class 6A — Jerome Malone (second in shot put), J’Da Williams (second in 100-meter dash) and Shanila Nance (third in 400-meter dash).
