Residents in Alabama and six other disaster-declared states won’t have to meet the customary April 15 deadline this year to file their state and federal taxes. The U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reminded taxpayers this week that the tax deadline instead has been extended to Thursday, May 1, in accommodation of Alabama and other states that met federal disaster declaration thresholds for the 2024 tax year.
Alabama in its entirety is among several U.S. states included in the May 1 filing extension, which is automatically applied and requires no requesting action from any taxpayer.
“The IRS normally provides relief, including postponing various tax filing and payment deadlines for any area designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA),” the IRS stated in an April 4 release. “If a taxpayer’s address of record is in a disaster area locality, individual and business taxpayers automatically get the extra time without having to ask for it.”
“Whether you are an individual or business filer, you automatically get the extra time without having to submit a request,” said Portia Johnson, an Alabama Cooperative Extension System financial resource management specialist, in a subsequent April 10 press release. “The only requirement is that your address of record with the IRS must be in the disaster area — and in this case Alabama is a disaster area.”
In addition to taxpayers in Alabama, the automatic May 1 filing extension also applies to residents in the entire states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, as well as residents of certain counties in Alaska, New Mexico, Tennessee, and Virginia.
According to the IRS, eligible tax returns and payments under the May 1 deadline include:
— Calendar year 2024 partnership and S Corporation returns normally due on March 17.
— 2024 individual income tax returns and payments normally due on April 15.
— Quarterly estimated tax payments normally due on April 15.
— Calendar year 2024 corporate and fiduciary income tax returns and payments normally due on April 15.
