According to recently released population data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Limestone County has been named the fastest-growing county in the state of Alabama for the fourth consecutive year.
The county experienced a staggering 3.6 percent population increase last year. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s population estimates that were released on Thursday, March 13, Limestone County gained 4,139 new residents from July 1, 2023, to July 1, 2024.
Over the past four years, Limestone County has seen a population surge of 15,381 new residents — emphatically marking a 14.9 percent increase in population since 2020. The data also revealed that Limestone County currently ranks as the 10th most populous county in the state of Alabama.
The Huntsville Metropolitan Area, which encompasses the rapidly expanding Madison and Limestone counties, ranked as the 15th fastest-growing metro area in the entire nation, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Bethany Shockney, President and CEO of the Limestone County Economic Development Association (LCEDA), attributed this growth to the area’s economic vitality and strategic location.
“Limestone County continues to be a prime destination for businesses and families alike,” Shockney stated in a release Monday. “Our strong job market, excellent quality of life and strategic investments in infrastructure make this county a top choice for those looking to relocate.”
Just last week, on Tuesday, March 12, GE Aerospace announced their plans to invest nearly $1 billion in its U.S. factories and supply chain to strengthen manufacturing and increase the use of innovative new parts and materials needed for the future of flight.
The sizable expenditure, which will benefit more than two dozen communities across 16 states, included a $22 million investment in the Huntsville metro area to produce materials that are the building blocks for ceramic matrix composite engine parts, according to a release from GE Aerospace.
“GE Aerospace’s investment in Huntsville-Limestone County is great news for North Alabama,” Shockney said. “It reinforces our region’s reputation as a leader in advanced manufacturing and aerospace innovation, creating new opportunities for our workforce and strengthening our local economy. We’re excited to see this growth and the positive impact it will have on Limestone County and the entire region.”
Athens-Limestone County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Pammie Jimmar emphasized the role of the local business community in attracting new residents.
“Our small businesses are the heartbeat of this county, creating jobs and opportunities that draw people here,” Jimmar said. “The economic momentum we are seeing is a testament to the hardworking entrepreneurs and business leaders who make Limestone County a great place to live, work, and play.”
Tere Richardson, executive director of Athens Main Street, also highlighted the county’s vibrant downtown area and the county’s historic charm as key factors in its appeal.
“People want to live in communities with character, where they can walk to restaurants, shops and events,” Richardson said. “Limestone County offers that and more, with its rich history, welcoming atmosphere and dynamic local culture. Our growth reflects the investment and passion of those who call this place home.”
Limestone County Commission Chairman Collin Daly underscored the importance of infrastructure and quality public services in managing the county’s rapid expansion. He added: “As our county continues to grow, we remain focused on ensuring that our infrastructure, schools and public services keep pace with the needs of our residents.”
Community leaders expect the immense population growth to continue as more individuals and businesses recognize the area’s economic opportunities, quality education, flourishing healthcare systems and the strong sense of community that beats in the heart of Limestone County.
