Athens Police Department Officers responded to a two vehicle crash at US 72 West and Brownsferry Road in Athens at 10:48 a.m. Friday.  It had been reported that several injuries had occurred.

Upon arrival, officers found that one car had been east-bound on US 72 and an SUV had been south-bound on Brownsferry Road.  Several Athens fire and rescue units and multiple ambulances were needed to treat the five injured occupants. Four people had been in the East-bound car and one person in the South-bound SUV.

The road was closed for approximately two hours and has now been reopened. All five people were taken to local hospitals with moderate to severe injuries.
