PREP SOCCER: Athens girls sets new state record

Athens’ varsity girls soccer team set a new state record on Thursday, scoring all 21 of their goals in the first half of a shutout win over Columbia.
The 21 goals are the most by one team in both a half and match in AHSAA history. It’s also the highest number of combined goals since 2016, when there were 20 scored by Prattville Christian in a shutout win over Ellwood Christian.
Thirteen different players netted goals for the Golden Eagles (6-2), including Leslie Vicente (three), Charleigh Maxson (three), Madigyn King (two), Ella Anderson (two), Kinley Hargrove (two), Layne Tarokh (two), Kate Cristan, Emma Tarokh, Marian Lovvorn, Merritt Maclin, Kylie Broyles, Braly Weldon and Lily Cooper.
