How many years have you been in education?

I have been in education for 26 years.

How many are with Limestone County Schools?

I have been with Limestone County Schools for 6 years.

What makes you proud to be an educator?

As a military spouse, I have had the opportunity to teach in 12 states. Over my 26 years of teaching, I have been blessed to work with thousands of students. I do not know all their paths, but from this group doctors, pageant winners, marines, lawyers, White House staff and teachers are a few whom I have had a moment in time to guide and in turn been inspired by.

What has your experience in the education field taught you?

A student’s spark of interest starts with a connection, a curiosity a reason. Our youth spend thousands of hours and limitless energy on what they feel passionate about. Opening the door to linking a student’s natural yearning to learn with real world applications can make all the difference in a student’s academic success.

What do you enjoy most about working for Limestone County Schools?

Alabama Connections Academy hosts such a large population of students, each with unique needs. As a mother of two sons who were able to choose virtual learning environments when best suited for their needs with many military moves, I value a community who invests in providing multiple avenues for student learning. Also, the staff at Alabama Connections Academy, and Limestone County Schools genuinely possess that classic sense of southern hospitality. I have never before worked with such a group where colleagues value one another and their shared mission for student success with such close-knit camaraderie.

How do your students inspire you?

Math can be such a challenging subject for so many students. So many are afraid of math or have misconceptions that they are not good at it. I love helping students take small steps in realizing that their fears and math anxiety can be conquered, and also in helping students realize that things worthwhile in life take a lot of effort. When students grasp a concept or make a connection, being part of their math journey is so rewarding.

What are your hobbies?

My hobbies include reading, traveling, being a mom and military spouse, shopping, fashion, church work and organizing.

What is your favorite quote?

“A teacher affects eternity; she can never tell where her influence stops.” — Henry Adams

The Alabama Teacher of the Year Program honors and recognizes excellence in the teaching profession by identifying outstanding classroom teachers at local, district and state levels. The Teacher of the Year Program is open to any public school classroom teacher, librarian, counselor or other certified individuals in a K-12 setting.

The Limestone County Schools System honored each Teacher of the Year at the annual Teacher of the Year Banquet held on Monday, Dec. 2. The Limestone County Schools District-Level Elementary (K-6) and Secondary (7-12) Teacher of the Year, along with the Educational Support Person of the Year, was announced at the special event. These teachers will then represent Limestone County Schools in the Alabama Teacher of the Year state competition.
