Birthday in a box: Seniors give back to local youth

Seniors at Athens Health and Rehabilitation, LLC, recently came to their activity staff with an idea for a community give back initiative.

“We had a resident come into the office and tell us that they wanted to give back to the community,” Jessica Chambers, the Activity Director at Athens Health and Rehabilitation, LLC, stated in a press release. “When I asked what they suggested, it was to give back to those in need — especially those with children.”

That senior resident, according to the release, was worried that somewhere in Limestone County, there were parents who may not have the adequate resources to provide a proper birthday cake to their children.

In response to that, those same residents, with the help of their activity staff, came up with the idea of crafting makeshift “birthday cake boxes,” to ensure that every child was able to celebrate their birthday with a sweet treat.

Inside the “birthday cake boxes,” made out of a disposable aluminum pan, is a box of cake mix, icing with sprinkles, candles, a card, a letter from the residents and a stuffed animal balloon dog.

The residents have completed five total birthday cake boxes in the month of February, all of which were donated to the Athens-Limestone County Family Resource Center to be given out to families in need.
