HANCEVILLE — Athens Bible’s season ended Tuesday following a 41-39 loss to Meek in the Class 1A Northwest Regional Tournament.

The Sweet 16 matchup remained close throughout — with neither team seizing more than a six-point lead.

The Trojans, making their first regional appearance since 1997, had several looks under the basket on their final possession but couldn’t get one to fall before time expired.

Athens Bible graduates four seniors — Will Ledbetter, AJ Bradford, Luke McElyea and Noah Hester — but will back a group of players no doubt hungry to return to the big stage.

Coach Speak

“I’m extremely proud of our team and the community. We were on a mission to change the basketball culture and put Athens Bible back on the competitive map. We finished with a winning season, area championship and trip to Wallace State. We accomplished our mission.” — David Chumbley

“We were led by four very special young men (seniors). From the beginning of the season, they committed themselves to uplifting the basketball program. I owe them everything. They drove us on this wonderful journey … can’t thank them enough.” — Chumbley

“This season was critical because it showed the entire community what we’re capable of doing. We have a lot of talent returning next season and a fanbase that’s fired up to support us. I think the Athens Bible basketball program is back on the map.” — Chumbley
