Our view: Health officials bring season’s tidings

It’s already that most magical time of the year … the time when a simple inoculation can save you — and others around you — much pain, time and trouble.

Alabama doctors are joining in force to call on all of us to protect ourselves and our community by participating in “Flu Shot Friday” Nov. 15. Organized by the Medical Association of the State of Alabama and the Alabama Department of Public Health, this campaign urges everyone older than 6 months old to roll up their sleeves for a flu vaccine.

Health experts recommend that nearly everyone 6 months and older get vaccinated annually, with special emphasis on those at higher risk, including adults older than 65, young children, and individuals with conditions such as asthma and heart disease.

The reasons to follow that recommendation are many:

Protection: The flu shot is the best way to prevent the flu and its complications. But if you do get the flu, it’s likely to be less severe.

Reduced hospitalizations: Health officials note a marked decrease in flu-related hospitalizations when flu shot numbers are high.

Reduced missed school and work: Less time having the flu means more productive days.

Protection for others: Protecting yourself from the flu helps keep those around you healthy.

Herd immunity: The flu vaccine is most effective when more people get it.

Protect our healthcare system: Getting a flu shot helps to keep our medical facilities from becoming overwhelmed during respiratory illness season.

The flu shot, recommended every year in the fall and winter — before flu season starts — can take about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop and provide protection. That’s why Alabama medical officials are prompting Nov. 15 as a target day to get the shot.

Flu shots are available statewide at county health departments. For more details on where to get vaccinated, visit ADPH’s flu vaccine information page.
