Letter to the editor: Council makes a wrong move on annexation

I watched the streaming of the July 22 city council meeting and was wondering why the council would consider going against the recommendation of the planning commission in denying the request of annexation of a home and 31 acres into the city.
Homes and developments built in the county are not annexed into the city as they are not built to Athens code and so this should be an easy no.
The chair of the planning commission even went so far as to write an eloquent letter to the council laying out the reasons why they voted to recommend the council vote no. That is a rarity. If you allow one house in, you will eventually allow entire developments into the city and that will bring additional problems for the city and it’s limited resources.
If you want your kids to attend city schools, buy a house in the city limits. Better yet, build one in the city. Council needs to uphold its ordinances and vote no on annexation.
