Coroner identifies man who died in Tanner house fire

Limestone County Coroner Mike West informed The News Courier that 62-year-old Steve Binford was identified as the body recovered from a Tanner house fire on Friday, July 5.
“He was identified by dental records at the forensic lab in Huntsville,” West said. “The cause of death is pending the toxicologist report.”
Previous reports have confirmed that Binford was blind, and the only person living at the Tanner home on Griffith Road.
According to a statement from Athens Fire Chief James Hand on July 5, the Athens fire department received a call around 1:30 a.m. to assist in the county fire.
Athens Fire and Rescue, along with Clements, Owens and Tanner emergency fire units responded to the scene. The crews worked to extinguish the fire, requesting a tanker truck to assist in extinguishing the flames that engulfed the home
Hand said the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office and the State Fire Marshall are currently handling the investigation.
