Under the leadership of Heidi Stinnett, the director of the countywide aging program, the Limestone County Council Of Aging has utilized multiple local events to enrich the quality of life for senior citizens in the area.
“It’s a really great public service that we try and maintain for our seniors, 60 and older who live in Limestone County,” Stinnett told The News Courier on Monday, July 1. “We are willing to serve, and we are willing to assist, this community full of seniors with no cost to them.”

Stinnett said that their program has had a focus on offering a variety of health, educational and recreational activities in recent months. The aging program currently has activity centers in Ardmore, East Limestone, Elkmont, Tanner and others — offering socialization opportunities as well.
“We want to make sure the word is getting out that we are here to help,” Stinnett said. “Spreading the word of what we have available is important, because a lot of people don’t know what all we have. If you are looking to connect, fellowship or even just a ride to the doctor, we are here.”
Outside of the transportation that the centers offer, every Monday through Friday of each week, they also provide insurance and legal assistance counseling for seniors in the county.
“We are trying to broaden our spectrum to see what the true need of our seniors is,” Stinnett said. “We are trying to adapt to the various problems our seniors may face each day to better help them.”
Since May 1, the aging program has held a handful of events that have allowed seniors in the area to stretch their legs while showing off their unique skills.
On Friday, June 28, the Tanner Activity Center rounded up more than 20 of their senior residents for a trip to Joe Wheeler State Park. At the park, the seniors got the opportunity to show off their fishing skills while also going on a boat cruise.

“We’ve had different trips throughout the year, all of which have been unique,” Stinnett said. “We went to Buc-ee’s and we went fishing recently. We also visited a 9-1-1 call center, to get a neat behind the scenes look of what goes on in those frantic situations.”
Other day trips are still going on at their various activity centers throughout the county. The aging program’s pinnacle county-wide Health Fair will be on Friday, September 27.
