Athens Police officers responded to a home on Elles Drive on Saturday, June 15, around 2:15 p.m. after a caller indicated a juvenile was acting out of control and threatening family members with weapons.

When officers arrived, the 15-year-old male was armed with knives and guns, Pressnell said. The teen went to different rooms in the house and threw knives at the officers, the chief said. The teen pointed a rifle at police, and fired once, missing officers, Pressnell said. Police returned fire, and the teen was wounded by one round.

Officers administered first aid until Athens Fire and Athens EMS arrived. Pressnell said the teen received medical treatment but died Saturday.

The Athens Police Department has turned the investigation over to the State Bureau of Investigations.
