The season ended for Athens following back-to-back shutout losses to No. 1 Hartselle in Thursday night’s Class 6A quarterfinal series.
Jace Meadows tossed a no-hitter in Game 1 to lift the Tigers (30-8) to a 1-0 triumph before Nick Chumley propelled the home team into the semifinals with a three-hitter and 4-0 victory in the nightcap.
Grayson Hays threw a gem for Athens in the opener — scattering four hits, three walks and three strikeouts across six good innings of work.
Meadows, though, kept the road team’s bats just a bit quieter.
The junior right-hander struck out four and surrendered only two walks, both of which were issued to Jack Elliott.
The only other baserunners for the Golden Eagles came in the first inning via a pair of Hartselle errors.
Asher Doepel’s two-out RBI single in the second proved the difference for the Tigers, who continued to pitch well in Game 2 with Chumley allowing just the three hits to go along with two walks and a strikeout.
Hartselle plated three runs in the third inning and another in the fifth to give the senior plenty of run support.
Walker Fleming, Jaylen Malone and Riley Miller each had a hit for Athens in the loss. Elliott and Miller recorded a walk apiece as well.
Hudson Marks, Jaret Johnson, Conner Stiles and Nash Hargrave, meanwhile, limited Hartselle to just four hits in a combined effort on the mound.
The Golden Eagles capped the program’s deepest playoff run since 2011 with a 25-14 record. They also won the 6A, Area 15 regular-season title.
