(Paws and Reflect) Keeping your pet in top health

A healthy pet is a happy pet — and brings along a happy owner. Just as we take measures to ensure our own health with routine checkups, diet and exercise, we need to do the same for our pets to keep them in optimal health. Here are some basic tips to keep Fido or Fluffy in tip-top shape.
– Just like people, pets should have an annual physical and checkup; more frequently for senior pets or ones with health concerns. You can combine their physical with their annual booster shots, parasite control and heartworm treatments. Dental health is also important and should be scheduled by your veterinarian according to the age and health of your pet.
– All pets should get regular exercise for heart health and weight management. Even just a short walk or some playtime with a toy will keep them active. Quality time exercising or playing with your pet can also encourage bonding with family members. Remember to include mental exercises for your pet by providing stimulating toys and treat puzzles, scratching posts for cats andchewy toys for dogs.
– Providing age-appropriate, healthy food for your pet as well as ample amounts of fresh water will provide your pet with proper nutrients and help your pet to maintain their ideal weight. A pet who is prone to obesity will have to be fed a portion-controlled diet that can be designed by your vet. Too many treats are unhealthy, so think of other ways to reward good behavior or show affection to your furry friend.
– Grooming depends on the breed of animal you have. Maintaining a healthy coat, detangling and regular brushing and nail trimming gets your pet used to the routine of grooming and can become a great source of pleasure for them as they are lavished with attention.
– Stress management can greatly improve or maintain your pet’s health. A noisy, chaotic environment can cause stress for a pet. Providing them with a safe space to retreat to, a bed that they know belongs to them, a comfort toy or a yard to play in for a time out will help sooth most animals.
Overall, if we make the same healthy choices for our pets that we do for ourselves, we can look forward to a long, healthy life with our furry companions.
