The use of CBD oil in humans and pets is rapidly growing in popularity. Humans are using CBD to relieve pain, anxiety, neuropathy, seizures and more and is now gaining attention for its possible benefits to our pets.

Although scientific research has only been done with animals on a small scale, anecdotal evidence from pet owners is very encouraging. Current recommendations for the use of CBD in pets is based on veterinarian’s professional experience and these small studies.

According to GoodRx, CBD has been shown to help anxiety, inflammatory issues, seizures and chronic pain in pets. Pet parents who have used CBD for their pets have had many favorable reviews, including reports that pets show improvement in their conditions in as little as 30 minutes. Pets who suffer from seizures or chronic pain and had little relief from traditional medications show the most promise of improvement with CBD.

The CBD in human products and pet products is exactly the same. However, it is up to the buyer to review the quality of the product and choose organic CBD. You can request the Certificate of Analysis from the company (usually found on the company’s web page), and review the ingredients for additives such as essential oils or flavorings that may be toxic to your pet. A review of any product with a knowledgeable veterinarian is strongly advised.

Although rare, side effects from using CBD are nearly the same for humans and pets, ie: loss of appetite, lethargy, dry mouth, fatigue or diarrhea. These symptoms usually resolve themselves within a few hours. However, if the symptoms persist or get worse, consult your veterinarian right away.

Ongoing research into CBD suggests that it may offer help with several pet conditions. Seek out a veterinarian with experience in treating with CBD to find the proper dosage for your beloved companion animal.
