- The mural created by lifelong Athens resident Brigette Miller and painted by a team of students from Lindsay Lane Christian Academy is now complete. It is located on two sides of the former Regions Bank drive-thru location across the street from Athens City Hall.
In an article published by WorldAtlas.com, Athens has been named one of the top 10 picture-perfect towns in Alabama.
“Named after the ancient Greek city, Athens is a town with a rich history dating back to 1818. This scenic town has many attractions for history lovers, foodies, and adventurers alike,” author Cole Beckstead stated.
Joining Athens in the list are the cities of arts- and culture-oriented Fairhope, U.S.S. Alabama’s home of Daphne, historic Leesburg, Enterprise with its Boll Weevil monument, brick-paved Northport, Mountain Brook and its scenery, Jasper’s water features, “Alabama’s cutest street” in Wetumpka and high-lying Oxford.
Athens, while originally noted for its namesake, completes the list with a focus on its varied restaurant selection and ‘well-preserved architecture.’ Visitors are also told not to miss the chance to visit the Alabama Veterans Museum located on Pryor Street.
“Be sure to visit the Alabama Veterans Museum, which displays the military history of Alabama and honors the contributions of veterans,” concluded Beckstead.
