Keeping pets safe during harsh weather events

The upcoming severe weather and frigid temperatures forecast for Limestone County can be a serious hazard to pets. A frightened pet will try to escape to a safe place, and high winds can literally carry a cat or small dog many miles. Severe cold can cause hypothermia to animals who have no protection from the elements.

Experts suggest that if your pet goes missing, immediately go to limestonepets.org, click on the tab “Report a Lost Pet” and put in as much information as you can, including pictures, last seen location, name of pet and any other vital information.

Also, click on the tab “Stray” to see if your pet has already been turned in to the shelter. The Athens Limestone County Animal Shelter, 701 US Hwy 72 E.,also always advises people to physically go to the shelter and look to see if your pet is there. If your pet is microchipped, the shelter will make attempts to contact you.

Depending on your location, you should also check with Decatur and Huntsville animal shelters.

If you have a neighborhood Facebook page, post your animal there as well. You can also look at Athens Pet Rescue/Lost Pets of Limestone County, Alabama and North Alabama Animal Warriors to see if anyone has reported finding your pet.

Tips for keeping pets safe during inclement weather include: keep them indoors, even a barn or garage is safer than a dog house. Keep them warm, check that their water is not frozen and providing extra food for energy will also help.
