It can take years to get a book published, but thankfully the residents of Athens Health and Rehab were able to see results within three months of the interviews that contributed to one college honor society’s book.

On Jan. 9, the residents of Athens Health and Rehab attended a signing party for ‘Through their eyes,’ a book written and produced by Calhoun Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa, Sigma Lambda Chapter. The honor society visited the rehab facility and interviewed the residents to gather information for a special project on the art of science and play and how to bridge the gaps between generations and form connections.

“The group of students came in and interviewed residents with 20 nostalgic questions, such as what were their favorite toys that aren’t made anymore, favorite foods, favorites singers, classic cars and tell me about a day in your life,” said Athens Health and Rehab Activity director Jessica Chambers.

After the interviews were complete, the students compiled a book with the information they learned.

Then, on Tuesday, Jan. 9, the students returned with the books in hand for residents to enjoy. To accompany the book delivery, the residents attended a signing party with some of their favorite things, such as glass bottled drinks, Moon Pies, licorice, doughnuts and slinkies.

Athens Health and Rehab Resident Doris Brown enjoyed getting to see a physical collection of her memories.

“This was a blessing to be able to have my memories written in a book for my family to have. It’s a little piece of me I can leave for them,” Brown said.

Athens Health and Rehab staff members were grateful to the Calhoun honor students for giving the residents such a wonderful experience.

“It brings joy to my heart to see these residents looking back on their lives, remembering the good ol’ days and sharing those times with this generation,” Chambers said.
