Seven-year-old Ella Lovvorn from Elkmont earlier this year requested a meeting with Athens Mayor Marks. The subject: The city needs a gingerbread house contest, she said. And also, the winner should receive $5,000 or a lava lamp.

A civics lesson in the making: Ella called back later in the fall to ask how much money Marks set aside for her contest. Shen then asked for a meeting to go over the details.

Her lobbying was a success. Now, the city of Athens and Athens Arts League are partnering with Ella, who calls herself Ella the Elf for this project, to host the first Ella the Elf Gingerbread House Contest Dec. 2 at 9 a.m. at the Athens Activity Center.

The entry fee is a new, unwrapped toy and the contestants are limited to 24 spots. The winners’ prizes will be cash — with first place receiving $100. and a lava lamp. The toys will be given to Toys for Tots and Lincoln-Bridgeforth Park Committee for its bike/toy giveaway.
