Ardmore relied on big plays, special teams and touchdown maker Chris Allen to take a comfortable 38-18 victory over Clements in a non-region matchup Friday night.

Four of Ardmore’s five touchdowns were on plays of more than 60 yards, and the fifth touchdown was set up by a 69-yard run to the 1-yard line.

Allen had two of those big plays. He retuned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter to give Ardmore a 21-0 lead and set up the Tigers’ next touchdown by racing 69 yards to the 1-yard line. Owen Doss scored on the next play to put Ardmore up by 28 points.

“Chris Allen continues to do everything,” Ardmore coach P.J. Wright said. “He had a punt return touchdown, an interception and a huge run down to the 1-yard line. He’s definitely got my vote for All-Region.”

Allen wasn’t the only Ardmore player making big plays in the special teams. After Clements scored its first touchdown of the game on a 48-yard run by Brayden Smith late in the third quarter, Conner Harbin returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown that basically iced the game.

“We’re continuing to do a good job in the kicking game,” Wright said. “Anytime you can score in the kicking game, it makes a huge difference in the game. It seems like it’s every week it’s the same story.”

Clements answered with a touchdown late in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Deontae Crenshaw. The Colts had the only touchdown of the fourth quarter when Riley Gosser burst up the middle for a 3-yard run.

Ardmore’s only points in the final quarter came on a 29-yard field goal by David Jenrath.

Ardmore didn’t wait until the second half to fire up the big-play machine. Both of the Tigers’ first-half touchdowns came on long plays.

Doss got the big-play party started on Ardmore’s second possession of the game when he took the snap and raced up the middle untouched for a 67-yard touchdown run.

The Tigers added to their lead later in the first quarter with another big play, this one a 63-yard touchdown pass from Doss to Harbin.

While Clements did score a couple of late touchdowns after the game was already out of reach, Wright said he was pleased with his defense’s performance one game after Ardmore gave up 41 points in a loss to Lawrence County

“Luke Hogan and Bryce Moore at inside linebacker both made several tackles,” Wright said. “They’re doing a good job of seeing and recognizing plays. Brody Dunn also played well and made some big tackles. Our defensive line doesn’t get a whole lot of stats, but they’re doing their job of fitting where they’re supposed to fit and it’s cleaning everything up for the linebackers.”

Ardmore improved to 4-1 and will jump back into Class 5A, Region 8 play Friday with a game against Russellville. Clements (1-4) will travel to Lauderdale County in a Class 3A, Region 8 matchup Friday.
