Elkmont coach Duane Wales said his team had to play nearly flawlessly to have a good chance against Randolph, but a series of mistakes put the Red Devils in a hole they could not get out of in a 62-0 loss Friday night.

“We’re just not built to overcome that,” Wales said. “If we make mistakes like we did, it is just really hard for us to get past it.”

The game started out well for Elkmont, as the Red Devils defense stopped Randolph in three plays and forced a punt. However, Elkmont’s drive was stymied by a series of penalties which pushed them back toward the goal line. The Red Devils attempted to punt on fourth down, but a low snap forced the punter to go to a knee to field the ball, which killed the play at the 1-yard line.

It took Randolph just two plays to score, on a Richard Laube 1-yard run, and go up 7-0. Elkmont never recovered.

“We did just what we needed to do, got a three-and-out, got them to punt and got the ball in decent field position,” Wales said. “Then we had about four or five holding calls in a row, and then we take the knee on the punt at the 1-yard line, give them 1 yard to score. We just can’t do things like that and expect to win games.”

Randolph scored its second touchdown late in the first quarter on fourth-and-goal from the 9-yard line. Quarterback Andrew Hunter scrambled and found Grayson Davenport alone in the back of the end zone for a touchdown strike to put the Raiders up 14-0.

Randolph added two more touchdowns in the second quarter. The first came midway through the quarter on an 18-yard scoring run by Hunter. Hunter then followed that up with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Day to give the Raiders a 28-point halftime lead.

Randolph’s size advantage really showed itself in the second half, with the Raiders scoring on every offensive possession. Randolph scored 20 points in the third quarter in a steady rain to put the game away. The Raiders rushed for more than 300 yards in the game and only attempted three passes in the second half, all of them on pitch sweeps.

Roan Campbell started the second-half scoring with a 29-yard touchdown run before David Clary scored on a 20-yard run. Clary scored his second touchdown in the final seconds of the quarter on a 12-yard scamper.

Carter Wimberly made the score 55-0 with a 14-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter and Drew Stanley closed the scoring with a 15-yard touchdown run with 17 seconds remaining in the game.

Clary led Randolph with 98 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just six attempts, while Campbell had 92 rushing yards and a score on seven carries.

Elkmont was led by quarterback Rowe Allen, who rushed for 73 yards on 13 attempts. He also had 42 yards passing on six completions.

Elkmont will travel Friday night to Ardmore in a rivalry game.
