PELL CITY, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama jail is temporarily closing on Monday.
The St. Clair County Jail, built in 1939 in Pell City, will be undergoing a thorough assessment, because of its age, a news release said. The building was last remodeled in 1994 but Sheriff Bill Murray said there have been some minor upgrades since then.
To ensure the safety of inmates and employees, officials said the facility will be temporarily evacuated as the assessment is conducted, WBRC-TV reported.
Sheriffs in surrounding counties, as well as the Alabama Department of Corrections, have agreed to house inmates temporarily.
There’s no immediate word on when the evacuation order will be lifted.
