Asking for help with a personal crisis can be tough in any situation. When one has a hearing or speech impediment, crippling anxiety or little to no privacy, having to call a phone hotline can be all it takes to prevent someone getting help.
That’s why Crisis Services of North Alabama now offers a text line. Bryan Rowse, an online emotional support coordinator with CSNA, said the text line offers the same free support CSNA’s HELPline offers, but for those who may be unable to call, or simply prefer not to. Rowse said the text line is open to everyone, but young people in particular benefit from the option.
“Data shows that younger people prefer a more ‘impersonal’ and less traditional way of communicating, such as text messaging, in both their daily lives and in a crisis situation,” he said.
The text line is open seven days a week from 4 to 11:30 p.m. at 256-722-8219. While CSNA mainly serves Madison, Morgan, Jackson and Limestone counties, Rowse said he’s talked to people all over the country because someone local shared the number, and that’s OK.
“I’ve run into people who feel like they don’t want to bother anyone or their parents don’t listen to them, or people don’t think their problems are worth it,” he said.
He said many people prefer to speak with someone they don’t know because they don’t have to worry about their problems being judged or shared behind their backs. Volunteers undergo training before being allowed to counsel anyone who contacts CSNA, and they’re willing to speak with anyone in need.
“Our unofficial motto is, ‘If you consider it a crisis, we consider it a crisis,'” Rowse said.
Those who can and would rather call can still reach the HELPline at 256-716-1000. While CSNA receives funding in part from United Way of Athens-Limestone County, those interested can visit csna.org for information on how to donate or volunteer.
