SPANISH FORT, Ala. (AP) — A teenager in Alabama says he kicked down a door and rescued a sleeping 83-year-old man as the neighbor’s home burst into flames.

Eighteen-year-old Demorrist Shaw told WPMI-TV that he was at his grandmother’s house in Spanish Fort on Friday when he saw flames shooting from a home across the street. Shaw told reporters that he ran to the house, and when the homeowner didn’t respond to calls, he kicked the door in and rescued him. The man was sleeping at the time.

WPMI-TV reports the 83-year-old was taken to a hospital for observation on Friday night, but his condition wasn’t given.

Video from the scene shows firefighters working into the night to extinguish the blaze.
