Prep Soccer: Several local soccer players make All-State

- Tanner freshman forward Manuel Felipe cuts inside and prepares to shoot against Westminster Christian in the first round of the Class 1A-3A state playoffs April 29. Felipe was named to the Class 1A-3A All-State team after scoring 26 goals and delivering 13 assists last season.
Six local players were selected to the All-State team in their respective classes as chosen by the Alabama High School Soccer Coaches Association.
Leading the way was Tanner High, which had three boys players selected on the Class 1A-3A team. Freshman forward Manuel Felipe, senior defender Christian Nolasco and freshman goalkeeper Emanuel Gonzalez were all selected after helping lead the Rattlers to an area championship and a spot in the Class 1A-3A playoffs.
Felipe led Tanner High with 26 goals and 13 assists last season. Nolasco scored three goals and had five assists from his defensive position, while also helping the Rattlers keep four shutouts. Gonzalez had 205 total saves on the season as goalkeeper.
In Class 5A, Ardmore High senior forward Saul Rodriguez was selected to the All-State team after scoring 27 goals, while Athens High midfielder John David Mathews was selected to the Class 6A All-State team after scoring 17 goals and dishing out six assists.
On the girls side, Clements High senior defender Rosa Hernandez was named to the Class 1A-3A All-State team. She had seven assists and helped the Colts post two shutouts.
