Lindsay Lane Christian Academy rising senior Tommy Murr has been dominant against Class 1A competition basically since he joined the varsity team.
Now he will get an opportunity to show his talents against the best players from around the state, regardless of classification. Murr was selected to the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association (AHSADCA) Top 100 Basketball Showcase, which will be Saturday, June 22, in Hoover. It’s an opportunity Murr said he is looking forward to.
“I know they haven’t done something like this before, so it’s fun to be a part of something like this,” Murr said. “I’m looking forward to getting out there and playing among some of the best players in Alabama. It just seems like another great opportunity I’ve been blessed with for me to be able to prove myself against the best in the state.”
Murr, a 6-foot-1-inch guard, has received several college offers — the latest from Troy. He hopes playing in the Top 100 Showcase, as well as the summer travel basketball team he plays on, will keep the offers coming.
“A lot of coaches ranging from mid-major programs to high-major programs will be there, so I’m excited to get this opportunity. I wouldn’t say there’s pressure, I just feel like it’s an extra opportunity for me to go out, have fun and play the game I love confidently. You can’t let it get to your head. Going into it, you’ve just got to have fun. That’s when I play my best anyway.”
The boys showcase is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Hoover High School.
This summer, Murr has played with the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) team out of Birmingham, called Alabama Fusion. He said it has been a great experience.
The league, sponsored by Nike, allows teams to play against other EYBL teams around the country.
“Playing with that team this summer has been huge for me,” Murr said. “I’ve been able to continue doing what I do in high school in that league and improve my game. It’s been a lot of fun.”
