Probation ends for former Alabama governor

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A judge has ended probation for former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman, who went to federal prison in a bribery scheme.
WSFA-TV reports that U.S. District Judge Keith Watkins this week agreed with an officer’s report recommending that probation end for the 73-year-old Democrat.
Siegelman was convicted on federal bribery charges 13 years ago. After appeals he served about six years in prison before his release in 2017.
Siegelman’s probation was supposed to end next year, but a probation officer determined the former governor had complied with all the rules and no longer needed supervision.
Siegelman shared a copy of the judge’s order dated June 11 on social media. He thanked his probation officer and the judge, plus family and friends and supporters.
