An Ardmore man accused of abusing his girlfriend’s child and a Rogersville man accused of shooting someone over $15 and a cellphone were among the 79 people recently indicted by the Limestone County grand jury.

Kevin Dewayne Jordan, 35, was indicted on an attempted murder charge related to a Jan. 5 shooting in the 20000 block of Tillman Mill Road. The victim was found in a parking lot shot several times with a 9 mm handgun, according to reports.

Limestone County sheriff’s deputies were able to get a description of the vehicle. With assistance from Athens Police Department, the vehicle and Jordan were found in Athens.

Limestone County Sheriff’s Deputy and spokesman Stephen Young told media outlets Jordan had been with the victim earlier in the day. Jordan loaned the victim his cellphone, which was never returned.

Jordan told investigators after his arrest he was also missing $15.

Young said Jordan had confronted the victim at the victim’s home, which led to a physical altercation that escalated to the shooting.

In a separate incident later in the month, deputies responded to a complaint of child abuse in Ardmore, which was filed by the Limestone County Department of Human Resources. DHR representatives met deputies at a home on Beech Fork Lane, where they found a woman and her severely bruised 2-year-old son.

The toddler had injuries to his back, buttocks and hand. Investigators determined the woman’s boyfriend, 32-year-old Chad Lynn Powers, inflicted the injuries.

Powers was initially charged with aggravated child abuse, a Class A felony when the victim is under age 6, which is punishable upon conviction by 10 years to life in prison. However, the grand jury indicted him on the lesser charge of torture or willful abuse of a child under 18, a Class C felony punishable upon conviction by 10 years in prison.

Young called it “the most severe case of child abuse Limestone County sheriff’s investigators have seen since they arrested Amanda Reyer and Derrick Defoe in 2015 for allegedly scalding Reyer’s two children.”

In that case, Reyer and Defoe were each convicted and sentenced to 40 years in prison after causing severe burns to a 2-year-old and 5-year-old by filling a tub with hot water and placing the children inside as punishment.
