Book club for kids
The Limestone County NAACP is offering a free motivational book club for children ages 3-13 from 9:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 8, at Round Island Creek Mission Center, 13829 Lucas Ferry Road, Athens. The program, Students Taking Excellence Personally, or STEPS, motivates students who may not enjoy reading. Donnell House special program
Dr. Ken Rivenbark, co-owner of Rivenbark and Roper and creator and host of the cable TV show “Southern Heirlooms with Ken Rivenbark,” will present a program on preserving our household history at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, at the Donnell House, 601 1/2 S. Clinton St., Athens. Rivenbark was recently named to the National Small Business Association Leadership Council Advisory Board. A brief business meeting will highlight last year’s accomplishments. Head Start
Community Action Partnership of North Alabama is accepting applications for early Head Start, preschool Head Start and state pre-K Head Start for the 2019–2020 school year. The Head Start programs are for children 3-4 years old. Parents must provide birth certificate; verification of 2018 income in the form of a W-2 form, check stub, Social Security statement, child support, unemployment, etc.; and Medicaid or insurance card, if available. Nonperishable food drive
Lil Red Wagon Collections at 208 N. Houston St., Athens, is open 9 a.m.–7 p.m. the first week of each month to collect nonperishable food for local homeless people. Donated items will be given to Limestone County Churches Involved, which will distribute them.
