A hot air balloon came in contact with utility lines in Athens Saturday morning, but the occupants of the basket were uninjured, Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said.
Johnson said an Athens Police officer came upon the balloon hung in the power line on Cambridge Lane between U.S. 72 and Newby Road by chance at 8:47 a.m. The occupants of the basket were stranded between the power line and the ground, and a small fire was underneath the basket.
Johnson said the Athens Fire Department was called and came to extinguish the fire. The Athens Utilities then arrived at the scene and turned off the electricity to the line, allowing the occupants of the basket to escape unharmed and the scene to be cleaned up.
The balloon is assumed to have come from the Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Festival, which is taking place in Decatur this weekend.
