Memorial Day event

FRIDAY

Family movie night

American Legion Post 49 will host a family movie night for veterans and their families from 6-8:30 p.m. Friday, May 31, at 124 Cloverleaf Drive, Athens. The movie shown will be “Explorers,” rated PG. There is no cost to attend, but popcorn, soft drinks, snacks and hot dogs will be sold. Profits from this fundraiser will be used to support the American Legion youth programs. Coffee call

Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives will hold coffee call from 8-9 a.m. Saturday, June 1, at the museum at 100 W. Pryor St., Athens. The event is sponsored by Whitney Reinhart and Carson Wakefield.

Addiction rally

Ride With Me Street Ministry will host the Addiction Eviction Rally 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at Robert A. Tinnon Park on Fifth Avenue in Athens. Speakers will discuss addiction, mental health, suicide and gun violence. Churches and recovery organizations can set up for free. Free food and clothing will be given away. Boogie Shoes Bash

CEMETERY CLEANUP

Reunion Cemetery

Decoration day and a chicken and goat stew fundraiser will be Saturday, June 1, at Reunion Cemetery. Attendees are asked to bring containers. Send donations for Reunion Cemetery Fund to Nicole Collins, 25172 Alabama 127, Elkmont, AL 35620.

New Garden Cemetery

Cleanup day will be Saturday, June 1, with decoration Sunday, June 2. Donations for upkeep are needed. Jackson Cemetery

Decoration day will be Saturday, June 1, at the cemetery near Minor Hill, Tennessee. If unable to attend, mail donations for upkeep to: Bradley Alsup, 686 Alsup Hollow Road, Minor Hill, TN 38473.

Bethel Cemetery

Annual monetary contributions for cemetery upkeep are due. If you have family members buried in Bethel Cemetery, send donations to: Tommy Sprague, 25917 Pepper Road, Athens. Beautification Award

The Athens-Limestone Beautification Board is accepting nominations of businesses, public buildings and churches for the Beautification Award until May 31. To nominate or for more information: 256-233-8000.

A Few Good Yards

Limestone County Master Gardeners Association is looking for a few good yards. Gardeners with an award-worthy yard that is not professionally maintained can be nominated at https://mastergardeners-limestonecountyalabama.org/ or by emailing information about the gardener and yard with a photo to tlt_brown@charter.net.

Head Start

Community Action Partnership of North Alabama is accepting applications for early Head Start, preschool Head Start and state pre-K Head Start for the 2019–2020 school year. The Head Start programs are for children 3-4 years old. Parents must provide birth certificate; verification of 2018 income in the form of a W-2 form, check stub, Social Security statement, child support, unemployment, etc.; and Medicaid or insurance card, if available. Nonperishable food drive

Lil Red Wagon Collections at 208 N. Houston St., Athens, is open 9 a.m.–7 p.m. the first week of each month to collect nonperishable food for local homeless people. Donated items will be given to Limestone County Churches Involved, which will distribute them.

Flex class

Free health and healing seminars will be at 7-8 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each monththrough September at Athens-Limestone Public Library.
