The weapon used in a Madison murder is being sought in the Elk River, officials with the Madison Police Department said Wednesday.
During a press conference, Chief David Jernigan and Capt. John Stringer said the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office has been working with the Florence Police Department’s dive team to recover the weapon believed to have been used in the fatal stabbing of Luke Robert Pratt. Police believe the exact location of the weapon may have been affected by recent storms.
The incident occurred May 6 at a home on Skyline Road. A second man, who has not been identified, was found inside the residence with a gunshot wound.
Six people, including two Athens men, have been charged in connection with the case. A seventh person, 19-year-old Kenneth Khesahn Altonia Harvey, remains at large and is possibly in the Jacksonville, Florida, area. Police would like the public’s help in locating him.
Others charged include:
• Caleb Ryan Kegley, 19, of Athens;
• Hunter Guy Ray Dubois, 20, of Athens;
• A juvenile;
• Hunter Mitchell Moore, 18, of Huntsville;
• Austin Blake Holmes, 19, of Toney; and
• Lucas Ray Kemp, 18, of Toney, and formerly of Athens.
Police said they believe Harvey and Kemp were together in Jacksonville when Kemp was apprehended by U.S. Marshals.
Police officials told the media robbery was the motive in the crime and narcotics may have also been involved. They also said the suspects in the case were all acquaintances.
Police say the crime was unlike anything they had seen in Madison but they compared it to the 1996 “cellphone murders” case in which four people were murdered in Huntsville because of a cellphone. Two people in that case were convicted of capital murder charges while a third pleaded guilty to felony murder.
The adults arrested in connection with the Skyline Road murder remain in the Madison County Jail. Jernigan and Stringer said the investigation is ongoing and that additional charges are possible.
