Editor’s note: The following briefs detail accomplishments by Limestone County students. Some of the information dates back several months, but The News Courier is pleased to publish these important announcements at this time.

Hamlett makes dean’s list

Chloe Hamlett of Athens was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2018 semester at Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee.

Consideration for the dean’s list is open to full-time students who have a grade point average of at least 3.6 in all work undertaken, no grade below a “C” and no incomplete for the semester.

Maryville College is a nationally ranked institution of higher learning that joins the liberal arts and professional preparation.

Langford named to dean’s list

Le’Chauz Langford, a management major from Ardmore, Alabama, was named to the dean’s list at Shorter University for the fall 2018 semester.

To achieve this honor, students must have been enrolled full time and have earned at least a 3.5 grade point average for the term.

Founded in 1873, Shorter University is a Christ-centered, four-year liberal arts university in Rome, Georgia.

Moore receives West Point appointment

Athens native Gerald Moore II, a high school senior attending St. John Paul II Catholic High School in Huntsville, was appointed in January to the United States Military Academy at West Point.

U.S. Sen. Doug Jones, D-AL, nominated Moore to the Academy following an intensive application and interview process last fall.

He is the son of Gerald and Bettina Moore. His future plans include obtaining a degree in chemical/bio-medical engineering and pursuing a career in orthopedic surgery.

Hatfield nominated to U.S. Naval Academy

Ellis Cade Hatfield of Athens received a nomination to attend the U.S. Naval Academy. He is the son of Emily and Eric Hatfield and is a student at Athens High School.

His nomination was announced in February by U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, R-AL.

In order to be considered for a service academy nomination, applicants must be residents of Alabama and complete the required ACT or SAT exams. They must also provide letters of recommendation, a school transcript, a completed medical examination, and a completed application form found on Shelby’s website.

Schrimsher named to dean’s list

Robert P. Schrimsher of Athens was named to the dean’s list at the University of Southern Mississippi for the fall 2018 semester.

To be eligible, a student must achieve a 3.5 grade point average.

The University of Southern Mississippi is located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Limestone students graduate from Montevallo

Olivia Gonzalez of Madison and Danielle Haney of Athens were two of the 160 students to receive their diplomas at the University of Montevallo’s fall commencement in December.

Myla E. Calhoun, president of Alabama Power Foundation and vice president of Charitable Giving for Alabama Power delivered the keynote address.

Students named to Montevallo president’s and dean’s lists

Several Limestone students were named to the president’s list at the University of Montevallo for the fall 2018 semester. To be eligible for the president’s list, a student must have a 4.0 GPA.

Those students were:

• Delee Benton, Madison;

• Rachel Fisher, Madison;

• Olivia Gonzalez, Madison;

• Danielle Haney, Athens;

• Alexandra Miller, Elkmont;

• Columbia Nave, Elkmont;

• Reanna Pipes, Lester;

• McKenzie Sayne, Athens;

• Morgan Scott, Madison;

• James Smith, Madison; and

• Zachary Watkins, Ardmore.

Two Madison students and one Athens student were named to the dean’s list at the University of Montevallo for the fall 2018 semester.

To make the dean’s list, a student must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average.

Those students are:

• Samantha Burns, Madison;

• Analee Ruble, Madison; and

• Seth Graham, Athens.

Limestone students graduate from WGU

Five Limestone County natives recently earned degrees from Western Governors University, an online, nonprofit university.

The students are as follows:

• Jessica Ortiz of Athens;

• Michael McDonald of Athens;

• Linda Smith of Elkmont;

• Wesley Hovis of Elkmont; and

• Frances Sebghati of Madison.

WGU has recognized 12,920 undergraduate and 8,885 graduate degree recipients.

Each has completed their degrees since June 1, 2018.

Athens native presents research

Terrie Palmer of Athens recently presented undergraduate research as part of the University of Montevallo’s Undergraduate Research Day on March 20.

Palmer presented “Diverse Enough for You?” as part of the 22nd annual event. According to a press release, the goal of Undergraduate Research Day “is to involve students in their own learning, to develop teamwork and pride, to enhance interdisciplinary learning and to share in the exhilaration of discovery.”

Glass graduates from Shorter

Cally Lynn Glass of Athens recently received her bachelor’s of science in nursing from Shorter University.

Commencement exercises were held May 2.
