A 63-year-old Athens man was killed early Thursday on Elm Street in Athens after a westbound motorist struck him, an official said Thursday afternoon.

Kent Sowell was walking east on the side of Elm Street, between Springer Boulevard and Lucas Ferry Road, shortly after 6:30 a.m. when he was struck, Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said.

Sowell died at the scene, the chief said.

The investigation into the accident is continuing, he said.
